You are like expecially like smart

On Air picListen to what you say today. I had a house full of teenage girls last night. I know you are extremely jealous. Today’s tip comes from a lesson we conducted in the kitchen. No one, including employers, will take you seriously if you use the word LIKE 82 times in the course of one short conversation. And, this bonus tip we discussed: the word is pronounced eSpecially not eXpecially. This tip is not just for teenage girls; LIKE and eXpecially are creeping into adult conversation way too often. Record yourself having a conversation today and listen to it later. Any bad habits?

I sign off today with a tip of the mic to someone who spoke so many words (so well) for so many years for our enjoyment. One of the few things I have kept from my years in radio – an introduction Don Pardo did for me including the outtake. This is from the opening for the audio version of Rock to the Top: What I Learned about Success from the World’s Greatest Rock Stars.

Rest in peace Don. Rest in peace.
